วันที่ 12 พ.ค. 2560/2017 เวลาเช้า ณ ประเทศศรีลังกา ได้มีการจัดงานฉลองวันวิสาขบูชา

คำว่า วิสาขบูชา เป็นคำเรียกสั้นที่ตัดมาจากคำภาษาบาลีว่า วิสาขปุณณมีปูชา บางทีก็เขียนเป็น วิศาขบูชา ซึ่งเป็นรูปที่ตัดมาจากคำภาษาสันสกฤตว่า วิศาขปูรณมีปูชา แปลว่า คำว่า วิสาขบูชา เป็นคำเรียกสั้นที่ตัดมาจากคำภาษาบาลีว่า วิสาขปุณณมีปูชา บางทีก็เขียนเป็น วิศาขบูชา ซึ่งเป็นรูปที่ตัดมาจากคำภาษาสันสกฤตว่า วิศาขปูรณมีปูชา แปลว่า การบูชาในวันเพ็ญ เดือน ๖
วันเพ็ญเดือน ๖ นี้ เป็นวันสำคัญทางพระพุทธศาสนาวันหนึ่งในรอบปี เพราะเป็นวันที่พระพุทธเจ้าประสูติ ตรัสรู้ และ ปรินิพพาน เหตุการณ์ทั้งสามร่วมกันในวันวิสาขบูชานี้เป็นมหัศจรรย์

ในปี 2560 นี้ องค์การสหประชาชาติ (UN) ได้มีมติให้ ประเทศศรีลังกาเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดงานวิสาขบูชา ซึ่งมีผู้นำศาสนา ผู้แทนชาวพุทธ กว่า 400 รูปคน จากนานาชาติ กว่า 100 ประเทศ ร่วมในพิธี

ผู้แทนจากมหาวิทยาลัยมหาจุฬาลงกรณราชวิทยาลัย ประเทศไทย นำโดยพระพรหมบัณฑิต อธิการบดี พร้อมด้วยผู้บริหาร คณาจารย์ เจ้าหน้าที่ มจร ร่วมในพิธี

ในการนี้ มีการประชุมวิสาขบูชาโลกในหัวข้อเรื่อง “คำสอนพระพุทธศาสนาเรื่องความยุติธรรมในสังคมกับสันติภาพโลกที่ยั่งยืน” ระหว่างวันที่ 12-14 พฤษภาคม 2560/2017 ณ กรุงคอลอมโบและเมืองแคนดี้ ประเทศศรีลังกา โดยมีรัฐบาลศรีลังกาเป็นเจ้าภาพ โดยมี พระโสภณวชิราภรณ์ (ไสว โชติโก) รองอธิการบดีฝ่ายกิจการต่างประเทศ รักษาการผู้อำนวยการวิทยาลัยพระธรรมทูต พระแสงเฮือง นรินฺโท ผู้อำนวยการกองวิเทศสัมพันธ์ มจร เข้าร่วมในพิธีและการประชุมด้วย

ภาพ : วิทยาลัยพระธรรมทูตOn 12 May, 2560/2017 SRI LANKA: Vesak (Sinhalese), Vesākha (Pāli), Vaisākha (Sanskrit) is the name used for the 2^nd month in Sri Lankan traditional Moon calendar (Lunar calendar) which corresponds with the month of May in the Gregorian calendar (Solar calendar).

It was on the full moon day in the month of Vesak, Prince Siddharta was born, became enlightened and attained Mahaparinibbāna. The full moon day of Vesak is celebrated by Buddhists honouring these three important occasions of the life of the Buddha.

The significance of Vesak lies with the Buddha’s teaching of cessation of suffering and universal peace to all humankind. It is a message to urge followers to do that which is good and to turn away from evil. It is a message of peace and perfect harmony between human beings and nature.

Vesak is associated with three important locations of Buddhist history – Lumbini in Nepal, the birth place of Prince Siddharta, Bodh Gaya (Buddha Gaya) Bihar State in India where The Buddha attained the most exalted Enlightenment under a Bodhi Tree and Kushinagar (Kusinara) in Uttar Pradesh, India where The Buddha attained Mahaparinibbāna.

These three incidents in the life of Buddha is known in Sri Lanka as “Themagula f;u.=,” or the three Buddhist auspicious events – Birth, Enlightenment and Mahaparinibbāna of The Buddha and celebrated in large scale in Sri Lanka and other Buddhist countries.

The United Nations General Assembly accepted the importance of “Vesak” and in 1999 by its resolution 54/115 acknowledged that Buddhism as one of the oldest religions in the world contributing to the spirituality of humanity for over two and half millennia and is commemorated annually at the United Nations Headquarters and UN Offices.

In 2017, United Nations International Day of Vesak will be hosted by Sri Lanka under the theme “Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace”. The events include an International Buddhist Symposium the participation of over 400 delegates from 100 countries.

There are MCU group led by Most Ven. Prof.Dr. Phra Brahmapundit, Rector of MCU to attain on celebrating United Nations Day of Vesak in Sri Lanka as well.

In this especially occasional event, Phra Sophonvachirabhorn, Vice Rector for Foreign Affairs of MCU, Acting Director of Dhammaduta College of MCU is with followers to join this ceremony celebrating the United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV) hosted by Sri Lanka during 12-14 May, 2560/2017.
